Role of other team members

  • Respiratory Therapist
    • Provide respiratory care modalities that support patient recovery from anesthesia (e.g., O2 therapy, nebulizer treatments, pulmonary drainage procedures, mechanical ventilation, and airway support).
    • Institute extubation protocols.
    • Monitor pulse oximetry, capnography, or other technology-assisted means of assessing hypoxemia or hypoventilation.
    • Assist with O2 and/or ventilation management during patient transport.
    • Perform arterial blood gas sampling in the absence of an arterial line.
      • Institute rapid intubation protocols if necessary in the absence of ACP.
      • Provide respiratory care modalities (e.g., O2 therapy, nebulizer treatments, and pulmonary drainage procedures).
      • Assist with O2 and/or ventilation support during patient transport.
      • Monitor pulse oximetry and capnography and titrate O2 as needed.
      • Perform arterial blood gas sampling as needed.
  • Physical Therapist
    • Perform initial assessment to ascertain normal functioning level if surgery was emergent.
    • Support patient motion and joint mobility.
      • Support patient motion and joint mobility.
      • Support patient return to baseline functional mobility following surgery.
      • Support nursing staff on best measures for joint positioning, transferring from bed to chair, and/or ambulation.
