It could be a sign of ulcers, appendicitis, or even something as simple as stress or overeating. If you’re experiencing stomach pain, always err on the side of caution and contact your doctor immediately. Because these issues can be quite serious, it’s better to head over to an emergency room for some tests and peace of mind—and it usually won’t cost you anything upfront if you have insurance coverage. On top of that, you can also call ahead and see if they have any appointments available in case there aren’t any open spots at your regular doctor’s office. Either way, there are a ton of benefits to getting checked out at an ER rather than just waiting it out until your next appointment with your family physician.

Although stomach aches can be caused by a wide variety of factors, it’s important to get checked out if you think you may have appendicitis. Although rare, it can be deadly if not treated immediately and correctly. If you feel as though your pain isn’t getting better after a few days, see your primary care physician or an emergency room physician right away. You’ll have tests run and will likely have your appendix removed within 24 hours of being in the hospital.
