High fever in infants

High fever in infants

In infants, a high fever can be a sign of serious infection, including meningitis. Also look for signs of dehydration and shock in children. Parents often consider taking their child’s temperature rectally (this is only accurate if you are consistent with placement) or underarm but these methods are less reliable than a thermometer that takes an oral temperature. Call your doctor immediately if your infant has a rectal temperature over 100 degrees Fahrenheit or if they have an underarm temperature over 102 degrees Fahrenheit as these may be signs of serious illness. If your baby has a fever, but looks well and is acting normally—meaning they’re eating and drinking normally—give them Tylenol or Motrin.
