How To Visit An Emergency Room Without ID
You accidentally filed your finger while slicing beef with your sharpest knife or your daughter breaks her leg at a gymnastics lesson or the fool driving you to work is texting while driving and you get into an accident. At some point in life during the hassle, chances are you will pick a trip to the emergency room involuntary. The experience isn’t a picnic. Also, you have probably not been in that situation before, where do you start? What do you carry with you?
Situations
If you come in with a life-threatening condition like a heart attack, profuse bleeding, severely broken bones, unconsciousness, and other fatal conditions, you will be rushed directly to the assessment room for immediate treatment. However, the basic information on the patient’s name, address, date of birth and any other information connecting to the medical history will be obtained from a family member or the friend who came in with them. Also, if the patient is conscious, he or she may provide the information. If neither is available, the medics will look for identification tools on the patient and dig deeper to search for any medical jewelry, indicators of medical conditions such as allergies or diabetes that will provide some medical information about the patient. Also, if the patient has a cell phone, the medics will be authorized to search for important contacts and call them to alert them about the emergency and further enquire about the patient’s medical history. The wallet may also disclose some details about the patient, with the presence of medical cards on blood pressure or sugar levels, medication or any other critical information that may be useful during the assessment.
Triage Step
After you have provided legit information about the patient, you will be referred to a triage nurse who will assess the severity of your condition. He or she will then determine where to place you in accordance to the severity status. The more severe the status, the more prioritized you will be. The nurse will then examine you and check for your vital signs like blood pressure and temperature. If the triage nurse confirms your condition is severe, you will be seen first in the emergency room. In the case where you are in too much pain and all the physicians are busy with severe conditions, the nurse will administer a first aid procedure to help you endure for the next few minutes.
Waiting Area
If you are referred to wait in the waiting area, it means the nurse has assessed more critical conditioned patients who will be treated ahead of you. It is therefore advisable that you seek medical help in a hospital or urgent care center if your condition is not severe. Otherwise, you might end up spending a lot of time and money.
Exam
Once your time has come, you will be directed to the treatment area where you will see an emergency physician who conducts a medical screening exam on you. You are likely to be asked a few questions while being examined. If necessary, the emergency physician will order diagnostic tests such as blood tests, X rays or CT scans to confirm the situations. Once all the results are out, your treatment will commence and a course of care prescribed. In case you suffer from any medical conditions, be sure to tell the physician.
